Nongriat is a village in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya State, in north-eastern India. It is perhaps best known for its two living root bridges; one an impressive double-decker suspension bridge called Jingkieng Nongriat. These are crafted by hand, as the Khasi people have done in the Khasi Hills for centuries, intertwining and weaving together the aerial roots of banyan trees on opposite sides of a stream-filled gorge.
Located 5 kms from Sohra, it is considered to be one of the tallest water falls in Asia. It is a hauntingly beautiful waterfall, cascading down from the top of the gorge to the mystic deep green pool below. It derives its name from a woman who leapt off the cliff.
Known as the cleanest village in the whole of Asia, a title bequeathed by the Discover India Magazine in 2005 and reinforced by BBC, UNESCO and National Geographic, the people of Mawlynnong have ensured that their way of living sustainable to the environment. Homestays and guest houses are available.
